5 Ways to Keep Your Family’s Travel Memories Alive

written by The Junior Nomads June 28, 2017

By Monisha Iswaran, MyDeal

Travelling with your family is an amazing experience, and is when many of your memories with your spouse and your children will be formed. Nowadays, going and printing out a bunch of photos and making them into an album has become a thing of the past, and people are far more inclined to make video montages, or do projects in a digital format to commemorate their adventures. However, besides photos, there are number of things you can do to help keep the memories of those special moments strong. Here are 5 ways to do just that, so that whether it’s a week in Europe, or a trek around Asia, you won’t be forgetting your holiday any time soon:

1. Keep A Blog About Your Travels

“A picture says a thousand words” – it’s a phrase we hear often. But what if we want to hear those words? Remember how you were feeling when you saw the pyramids in Cairo, or when you first set foot in Greece. Recall what was going through your mind as you sat on a beach in Sydney, or visited a temple in India. Keeping a blog or diary of your travels is the perfect way to keep them with you forever. Blogging allows you to share your travel journeys, and everything you learned along the way with those who may not have had the opportunity to do the same. It also allows you to share travel tips and advice with fellow travellers who have also been bitten by the wanderlust bug. Best of all, you can reread the story of your trip whenever you please – which is perfect if you have little ones who may not remember the experience in a few years!

2. Souvenirs Galore!

You don’t have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on souvenirs – but purchasing one small item from each place you visit can definitely help you to remember your journey better. Having physical representation of a place in your home truly helps you feel as though you’ve been there. This doesn’t mean you have to invest in something big. Buy a doll for your child in the style of the place that you are visiting, or buy a mug with a picture of a location you visited. Not to mention, a small gift resembling the place you’ve been to is bound to inspire your children to grow up to be extensive travellers themselves – so always take them into account when you’re gettings souvenirs. Browse discount baby and kids products online to make sure you have everything you need when heading off on an adventure with your little ones!

3. Make A Scrapbook

This is a great alternative to a photo album. Make a compilation of tickets, stamps, small pebbles or any small items you come across on your travels. Once again, the physical presence of objects you picked up and brought back from other countries really reminds you of what it was like to be there. Everytime you go through it, you’ll remember where you were when you caught that train, or ate at that restaurant and kept the receipt. It’s a great way to keep track of what exactly you did throughout the journey, and it’s a little more personal than only buying souvenirs.

4. Send Yourself Postcards

Sending yourself mail – is that the talk of crazy stuff? Maybe not! Sending yourself postcards from the different places you visit can be an exciting way to remember all the iconic places you’ve seen. The best part is, if you’re feeling a little down at the end of your vacation, you’ll have some fun mail waiting for you the second you get home. You can write a short note to yourself such as “I am writing this from a cafe, with the view of the Eiffel Tower ahead of me…….”, and it’ll make it all the more special!

5. Collect Christmas Ornaments

Although not dissimilar to buying souvenirs, this one is more specific. Buy one specific christmas ornament from each country you visit – preferably something unique to that place or culture. If they don’t celebrate christmas wherever you are visiting, buy a decoration for a festival they celebrate, that you can hang on your tree at the end of the year! That way when you put up the tree with your loved ones you can remark and chat about all the places you’ve been – and admire how your collection is growing. It’s also great fun to show the rest of your family when they come over for Christmas dinner!

Five fantastic alternatives to photos in order to remember the special moments and memories you make on your exciting journey around the globe!
