Top 10 Aussie Getaway Destinations in Winter

written by The Junior Nomads May 22, 2017
Smoky Cape Lighthouse

Are you filled with wanderlust, and always ready to plan your next getaway? Whether it’s for a quick weekend escape, road trip or full on vacation, there are just so many places right here in the country we call home that you can explore. Here are top 10 Aussie getaway destinations that are perfect for the upcoming winter months, including one of our favourites!

1) Margaret River, WA

Winter is arguably the best time to go to the Margaret River, as this is when you can avoid the hoards of tourists, who tend to go in the warmer months. Whether you want to go mountain biking, trekking or surfing, it’s definitely the place to go for a relaxing but active getaway. In fact, bring the whole family along – kids are bound to enjoy this area as well! Just be sure to pack a sturdy and good quality stroller, for all those scenic walks you’re sure to be taking.

2) Bareboating in the Whitsundays

Since it’s winter, why not head somewhere with great weather all year round? Sharon McNally from Cumberland Charter Yachts shares more on this awesome getaway suggestion:

“Bareboating in the Whitsundays. Tropical weather all year round! The Whitsundays is the perfect winter getaway to experience star-filled nights in tranquil anchorages. Visit secluded bays and explore rainforest covered Islands. Sun yourself on the world famous Whitehaven Beach or snorkel the fringing coral of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and come face to face with the abundant marine life.

Set your own pace and plan your own itinerary, confident of the backup and support only a radio call away from Cumberland Charter Yachts base and our team of qualified professional mariners. Experience it all with our yacht hire, catamaran hire or bareboat hire options in the Whitsundays.

Explore the beauty of the Whitsundays: Situated 1000k north of Brisbane, this famous destination boasts 74 islands, mostly inclusive of uninhabited national parks. With plenty of anchoring options spanning across the region, visitors can choose a route that is both flexible and convenient.”

3) Blue Skies In Darwin

Carolyn Pitt, a personal travel manager with Travel Managers Australia operating her own mobile travel agency, shares her perfect Winter getaway:

“Fancy a winter getaway where you can experience guaranteed warmth and plenty of sunshine within Australia? From June through September, Darwin and the “Top End” is a great place to visit. It’s guaranteed to be warm with blue skies and sunshine, not to mention a fabulous location to watch the sun go down with a cold drink in hand and overlooking the very blue waters of Darwin Harbour.

No longer just known for being a “big country town” Darwin is the gateway to explore some of the fabulous landscapes that the Top End is known for. Within a couple of hours drive of Darwin, you can check out the Adelaide River, get up close and personal (but not too close!) to crocodiles and check out a myriad of birdlife or explore the waterholes of Litchfield National Park.”

For more from Carolyn, find her on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

4) Smoky Cape Lighthouse

We have personally travelled tens of thousands of kilometres with our 4WD and caravan. Here is an excerpt from our article on our experience at Smoky Cape Lighthouse:

“The road headed through busy tracks before beginning to climb, and when the road finally cleared, we looked up to see a stunning view – a gorgeous B&B Cottage and Lighthouse straight out of a postcard. It was what you’d expect from a picture of Greece and the view was nothing but jaw-dropping. 360-degree views of the ocean and surrounding coastline, miles of beaches and 4WD tracks along the beach. An ideal location for another bit of whale spotting, the steep 5-minute walk up the hill from the car park is worth it. Do not miss out on this site if you are ever in the area!”

5) Barossa Valley, South Australia

Wouldn’t you love to spend your getaway sipping on shiraz and nibbling on cheeses next to a warm fireplace? Sure sounds like an awesome way to unwind away from home! You’ll enjoy the gorgeous scenery and give your taste buds a treat all within the same trip. From breweries to wineries to Chateau Tanunda, you’re bound to find something you like.

This isn’t to say that the valley is only a perfect trip destination for adults, kids can have a great time too! There are many gorgeous bike routes that you can go on as a family. If your little ones can’t yet ride on their own, invest in some safe and fun kids bike trailers, so that they can come along for the journey! Alternatively, catch the hop on, hop off bus and see the sights in style, going to explore whichever area takes your fancy.

6) Victoria’s Spa Country Region

If all you want to do on your vacation is chillout and relax, we’ve got just the solution for you. Matthew Lewis from View Retreats, shares more on their comprehensive collection of boutique & luxury getaways, including ones located in heavenly Daylesford and Hepburn Springs:

“In our experience, the Spa Country region in Victoria is, hands down, the most popular winter getaway spot in the country. Holiday makers from Victoria & interstate flock to the twin towns of Daylesford & Hepburn springs to experience relaxing mineral springs, indulgent spa treatments, quirky boutiques and markets, and world-class dining.

But the thing that makes this region really special is the high concentration of luxury & boutique accommodation. Daylesford & Hepburn Springs offer some of the best quality self-contained accommodation available in all of Australia, with beautiful locations, stunning architecture, gorgeous interior design and the very best luxury facilities. Most of the places have spa baths and fireplaces too, which helps to create the perfect winter ambience. To find out more, check out our range of luxury Spa Country accommodation.”

7) Swan Valley Wine Region

Can you ever really get your fill of winery visits? Unlikely! Perth-based wine blogger Casey, shares why the Swan Valley Wine Region is an awesome Australian winter getaway:
“Perth’s Valley of Taste aka the Swan Valley is the perfect Australian winter getaway. This fabulous wine region is only a 30-minute drive from the perth CBD and is full of wineries, breweries, cideries and food delights. I’d recommend your basecamp be the beautiful Upper Reach Vineyard Spa Cottage (equipped with fire and red wine) and spend your days exploring the region by car (ensure you have a skipper!), bike or foot. You definitely won’t be feeling the winter blues any longer after a few wine tastings!”
