Set in the historical Harbourmaster’s House at the top of the hill in Tathra, Fat Tony’s Bar and Grill is a favourite for both locals and travellers alike, and quickly became our second kitchen. Every week for the nearly 3 months we stayed in Tathra we would faithfully book our usual table on a Tuesday night and take the 2-minute drive up the hill, always admiring the views on the way.
Fat Tony’s was recommended to us as soon as we settled, and from memory we ate our very first meal in the area here. It took only that first visit for us to understand why it is the area’s best night time destination. The original home underwent extensive renovation works to give it the atmosphere it has today – relaxed and friendly, with a cosy romantic feel. We were greeted each and every time by Ant, who from our first phone call remembered our names, a real rarity in this day and age. It felt like going to dinner at a friend’s house each time, and like they only wanted to please with the very best food and drink that they could offer. We were never disappointed!
Each time we went there were subtle changes to the menu, so it never felt like we were settling for the same thing over and over again. This was the case for entrees, mains and desserts, although we confess the Sticky Date Pudding is the best we have ever tasted and for two people who don’t often buy dessert when eating out, this was a regular at our table, which says a lot!
Non-alcoholic cocktails were also not a problem to be whipped up, though not on the menu. Were they any good? Simply divine is a good way to describe them, along with every other meal we had. Anytime we pass through the area, look out Fat Tony’s – we’ll be back, and we’ll be making up for lost time!
HOURS
Regular hours for dinner are Tuesday to Saturday night with the bar open from 5:30. Hours are extended during holidays and long weekends.
SUITABILITY
From a romantic night out to family dinners or work parties, or just dropping in for a drink, anytime is a good time to visit!
BOOKINGS
Bookings are strongly recommended, if not essential! And if you see a special event coming up on the calendar, such as Valentine’s Day or a long weekend, don’t expect to turn up on the night and get a seat – though such is the nature of the place that they would go out of their way to find you a seat anyway. Phone (02) 6494 4550 to make a booking.
